Everytime someone asks one of us at Spark! what exactly it is we do, our go to response is, “Above all else, we’re guides.” Oftentimes this response is met with a sideways glance and a look of confusion. You can imagine this is awkward as heck in elevators, or at networking events. And don’t even get me started on how difficult it is to explain to family and friends who want to know what we do.
It can be hard to nail down exactly what it is we do at Spark!, so after some consideration, we are doing our best to put it into a short blog post.
We could give you some industry jargon that sounds really cool and professional, but that wouldn’t really help much. We could point you to our beautiful website, and you might still have questions. So here in this blog post, we’re gonna do our best to explain what Spark! is, and try to put it in a way that you could explain to your 5-year-old - Q&A style.
So, Ida, what do you do at Spark!?
First off, I should introduce myself. I’m Ida! I don’t really exist, but it’s more fun if you pretend I do. I’m the voice of Spark! and our official cartoon spokesperson. It’s my job to teach y’all about the things Spark! is up to and how we plan to change the world.
Because that’s our biggest goal, I think I’d say: we build harmonious and co-creative communities to create a better world.
“Big whoop, you want to change the world. Who doesn’t?” you’re probably thinking to yourself. And yeah, I get it. Changing the world is a pretty big umbrella, and how the heck do we even plan to do that?
So, Ida, how do you plan to change the world?
Well that’s just it! At Spark!, we lead leaders to fulfill their potential. We believe, and we have seen, the power of individual human potential to change circumstances and outcomes. To lead leaders, we look at things from all angles, incorporating evidence-based data and the lived experiences of a diverse range of people. We bring everything we learn to those we work with to learn from them and then co-create something together.
At the end of the day, our primary goal is to unify communities and organizations, and help them realize their full potential. And there’s a couple different ways we do that.
1. Leadership Development
If you are a leader yourself, we’ve developed a series of online and in-person trainings to help you gain insights about yourself, about the people you’re working with, and finally, about your entire team. This understanding translates into happier, healthier collaboration, and ultimately, effective change for the better. We recently launched our Origins course which encourages learners to do some serious introspection, and more courses/trainings are coming soon!
2. Strategic Action Planning
Do you have big dreams for your organization, but struggle knowing where to start? That’s where we come in! We use the lived experiences of the humans at the center of your organization to identify challenges, and formulate opportunities to improve the work you do. Whether you want to support under-resourced communities or launch an initiative, we can co-create a plan that drives collaborative action.
3. Backbone Support
Are you a fledgling organization just getting off the ground? Do you need a little bit of help getting up to speed so you can take off and fly like the wind? We’re here for that, too! With considerable expertise and resources, we’ll forge Reciprocal Partnerships™ that advance your collaborative from ideation and strategy to action. We’ll improve partner alignment, boost productivity, and help everyone work diligently toward an outcome that maximizes community impact.
At the heart of all of our work is humans. We use the principles of our own Human-Centered YOUnityTM to inform the work we do to advocate on your behalf, because, after all, we are all humans with human needs and human limitations. Nobody can, nor should, do it all, and everyone needs a little help sometimes.
We want to shift the paradigm that gets you thinking about how you want to make the world a better place, and we have lots of ideas to make your dreams a reality.
So there you have it! That’s more or less what Spark! does. Yeah, I know it took like 700 words, and still used a bunch of jargon that’s difficult to explain in one elevator ride. But I’d be willing to bet if you pushed all the buttons, you’ll have plenty of time to get the words out.
